Building traditional estate in Canada

These styles depend on proportion above all else. A Georgian elevation is a set of relationships between opening sizes, floor heights, string course positions and the entry surround, and getting one of them wrong is visible even to people who could not name the style.

They are also the styles most exposed to the gap between historical construction and contemporary expectation. A genuine Georgian house had small windows and thick masonry walls; a contemporary client wants daylight and an open kitchen. Reconciling those is the design problem, and the good examples solve it rather than ignoring it.

Demand has softened relative to transitional and contemporary work in most Canadian markets, with the notable exception of the established GTA and Montréal communities where the streetscape context supports it.
