Building modern farmhouse in Canada

The style dominated North American residential design through the late 2010s and into the 2020s, and it is now common enough that its ubiquity is a genuine consideration: a house designed at the peak of a style cycle reads as dated faster than one that was not.

That said, the underlying form is sound and long predates the trend. Steep gables, deep porches and simple rectangular massing are climate-appropriate and economical to build, which is why the vernacular looked that way in the first place.

The versions that will age best are the ones that took the massing and proportion seriously and skipped the styling shorthand — the barn door, the shiplap, the oversized lantern light.
