Building minimalist in Canada

Minimalism is expensive for a reason that surprises buyers: there is nothing to hide behind. A conventional house uses trim, reveals and mouldings to absorb the tolerances of framing, drywall and cabinetry. A minimalist house removes them, so every substrate has to be flat and every alignment has to be true.

That shifts cost from materials to labour and to the calibre of the trades. A minimalist house of a given size can consume dramatically more finishing hours than a traditional one, and the finishing trades capable of delivering it are a small group in most Canadian markets.

Ask a builder for a completed minimalist project you can walk through, and look at the transitions: door jambs, floor-to-wall junctions, cabinetry reveals, ceiling planes. That is where the answer is.
